I was diagnosed in 2016 at the age of 18. Two day prior to my diagnosis, I had experience spotting. Which had never happen to me before so I made an appointment to see an OB/GYN. I got a pap smear and then she starting asking questions about my period and my weight. She said to me “You may have polycystic ovaries”.
Clueless to what she meant. I just carried along with my day. I finally looked up what it was about and was brought to tears. I went to a second OB/GYN. At that point I didn’t see my period for 5 months so he put me on birth control to get my periods to regulate. The diagnosis was confirmed with an ultrasound and blood test.
I didn’t know irregular periods were a sign of something being wrong. I thought it was normal, some people have regular periods and some don’t. I wish I was more educated on that earlier.
I got really depressed about having PCOS and what it means for my future. One day I decided I had enough of letting PCOS control my life. I decided that I needed a freshstart so I cut my hair and starting a new diet. I have lose 55lbs and my hair has grown (can finally put it in a ponytail now).
I feel more at peace with my diagnosis now. I still struggle with what the future holds for me and being able to have children, I try not to think about it too much. I believe happiness is a choice and I choose to be happy. (Everyday is not sunshine and rainbows but I try my best).
This is my Freshstart PCOS story, it’s not much. I shared some other experiences
